Myth is a series of real-time tactical computer games. The essence of the game is not expansion, recruitment of troops or gathering of raw materials, but rather good use of purely tactical skills: planning, mobilising the assigned units, and using the natural conditions to your advantage.
With extremely realistic physics, excellent balanced units, many levels of difficulty and many other various factors, every game played is different and that makes Myth very addictive.
The fantastic world of Myth, full of heroes, monsters, powerful artefacts and breathtaking places, is the arena for the eternal struggle of mankind against the ever returning evil (more in the "History of Myth").
Myth is not meant just for solo playing. Anyone can check his or her skills in fights against other players from around the world or unite with others on a cooperative game to defeat the computer opponent on any of the single-player maps. Multi-player games are hosted currently on the mariusnet.com server (see "Links"). |
So far, there are three official games in the series. Unfortunately none of them is free on the internet, despite their age. Their price in on-line stores and at auctions (as most likely to be found there) is usually small, and certainly incomparably less than the true value of these games. In the "Links" page you will find the address where you can download a demo version of Myth II.
Each of the three games has 25 single player levels and many maps for multi-player games. You will get an unforgettable experience through the game's immersive story, atmospheric music and in-game professional animated cut-scenes. In addition, you get the opportunity to take on an entirely new challenge by creating your own maps (see "Editors") or play on those already created by other gamers from around the world.
Myth: The Fallen Lords
This is the first in the series, created by Bungie Software, and released in October 1997. The game immediately draw the interest of many fans of computer games, and today it can certainly be considered to have a legendary position among the other games in the genre.
Myth II: Soulblighter
The second part of the series was also created by Bungie Software and released in December 1998. Although there were some changes to the graphics, animation, etc., the essence of the game, which all the fans of the first part loved, has not been practically changed at all, despite the introduction of some changes to the interface and gameplay.
Myth II: Soulblighter is currently the most popular of all the issued three parts. This is due to, among other things, the inclusion of two programs by Bungie: Fear and Loathing. These are editing programs that allowed the creation of a large number of community made maps and plug-ins for Myth II. The result is that there is always something new to make us fall in love with the world of Myth again and again. Most notable example was when the Myth I campaign was imported into Myth II, allowing us to relive the glory of the original. In short, Myth II is the most versatile and popular part of the three games and, as such, we will be focusing mainly on it.
Myth III: The Wolf Age The third part of the series came out after Microsoft bought Bungie in 2000. It was developed by Mumbo Jumbo Software and released by Take 2 Interactive in December 2001. It is very different to the first two: not only the design has changed (the game is completely 3D), but also the gameplay feels different, although the essence of the game is still the same, i.e. tactical unit management. However, it is currently the most criticized game of the series. There are many reasons for this, but more likely it is due to the fact that when Microsoft bought Bungie, the development of the game was dramatically changed. |
